Harris Tweed and Felt Gifts, Handmade in Scotland

After a very enjoyable and successful day at The Handmade Show in Perth, I have now added all my existing stock to my Etsy shop. New additions include these Harris Tweed Keepsake Boxes ranging in price from £34.95 to £55. The lids of each box are needle felted and embroidered and the walls are constructed using genuine Harris Tweed. I make each of these boxes by hand here in my cottage studio in Fife, Scotland.

A new addition to my range of Harris Tweed gift items are these Covered Notebooks. I've had some of my artwork professionally printed onto velvet fabric which I then sew onto Harris Tweed to make these notebook covers. They are lined with cotton fabric and act like a jacket and can be put onto any A5 notebook, diary, address book etc.

My Felt Bookmarks continue to be popular and personally these are my two favourites. I love the colour combinations in the sheepy one and the shimmering sea in the crescent moon one.

Keepsake Boxes and 2022 Calendar

I've had quite a productive summer compared to the last 18 months and I'm delighted to be back in my 'making zone'! The pandemic is by no means over yet and so many things are not and may never be 'back to normal' but I seem to be able to focus better and actually get stuff done!

I've been developing some existing designs and added these little latch hook clasps to my little Keepsake Boxes.

The latches are not just decorative but actually work! I think they are so cute and love the way they keep the lid securely closed.

I have brass ones on the boxes in rustic shades.

 

And silver tone ones on the boxes in blues and purples.

I know, most of us are still trying to process 2020 but it will be 2022 in just over 4 months time!

My calendar features my most recent felt picture on the front. The puffin was inspired by puffins we saw at Duncansby Head on a trip to Caithness in July.

I've also used the puffin as the image for July.

I just had to use my Bluebell Woods image for May.

And my tribute to Fungie the Dingle Dolphin for June.

And I decided on a colourful little robin for December.

Other images include sunsets, boats, cottages and of course sheep.

It's so long since I exhibited at a show that I'm not even sure where my table cloths etc are! It will be great to be out seeing people face to face again though and I'm working on building stock already.

Little Boxes

Little boxes on my table,

And they're all made out of textile art
But they don't look just the same.

So yes I have been making little boxes.

I first started making these last year and took a notion to try a few more this week. 

The original inspiration for the one above comes from the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland. The clear turquoise water flows straight out of the awe inspiring Cuillin mountains and tumbles downstream through a series of waterfalls and pools. The contrast of the blue water against the rugged shades of the mountain side really caught my eye. I made a wall hanging similar back in April.

This little box below is more a cupboard really. 

It's a totally unique and one off piece. I love to use my embellisher machine to turn a variety of fabrics, yarns and fibres into a sumptuous surface of texture and rich colour. Included in the mix here are voiles, organzas, felting fibres, yarn and devore velvet. I have also included a little angelina fibre here and there for a touch of sparkle.
The box is lined with bright purple felt and closes with voile ribbon ties. 

You know how the creative process takes you from one idea to the next.......

well I wondered how one of my felt landscapes would look turned into a box and filled with a selection of my printed cards.

This is a prototype and not available as yet.

For the lining I have used some of the Harris tweed that I bought from the weaver at Carloway on our trip to the Outer Hebrides in August.

I think I'll make the next one with the landscape horizontal.
